The Australian Netball Diamonds, as always looking resplendent in their Kukri dresses, finished the Constellation Cup series with a 59-53 victory over the New Zealand Silver Ferns in Christchurch!
The trophy may have already been in the hands of the Silver Ferns after their victories in Melbourne and Auckland, but the Diamonds were determined to put on a show, and produced their best performance of the series to avoid a series whitewash.
The Diamonds made just one change from the team that nearly completed an unbelievable comeback against the Silver Ferns in game two, with Bianca Chatfield replacing the departed Julie Corletto at goal defence.
It was a fresh-faced and youthful starting seven - none of the players selected to start the game had more than 50 international caps, with captain Natalie von Bertouch and vice-captain Catherine Cox both started the game on the bench.
The Silver Ferns raced out of the blocks and took a 20-15 advantage into quarter time, but the second quarter belonged to the Diamonds as they overturned the deficit and built a four-goal lead, including a run of eight goals to two later in the half, courtesy of intercepts from Kim Green, Renae Hallinan and Laura Geitz.
The Diamonds held a 32-28 lead at half-time, and they wasted little time in extending this lead to a twelve-goal margin, with goal attack Natalie Medhurst carving up the circle and producing a flawless display with ball in hand, while Caitlin Bassett caused headaches under the post.
The Silver Ferns introduced Catherine Latu at goal shooter and her introduction was a fruitful one, as they went on to outscore the Diamonds 18-12 in the fourth quarter - however, it was too little too late, and the Diamonds held on for a well-deserved victory, with Natalie Medhurst taking the Player of the Match Award.
